Lions sign Austen Lane, make change to practice squad

The Detroit Lions have already made a few moves on Tuesday.

Phil Sears-US PRESSWIRE

The Detroit Lions returned to work from their bye week on Tuesday and didn't waste any time in getting back to business. I say that because they have already made a few roster moves by signing defensive end Austen Lane and swapping out running back Steven Miller for tight end Martell Webb on the practice squad.

Lane joins the Lions after spending some time with the Kansas City Chiefs this year. He ended up in Kansas City after playing for the Jacksonville Jaguars for the first three years of his career. In 2012, he had 32 tackles, 2.0 sacks and a forced fumble in 11 games with the Jaguars.

Currently, it's unknown who is being released to make room for Lane. The thinking at this point is that Lane is being added because the Lions are in need of extra depth on the defensive line, especially at defensive end. With Ziggy Ansah missing practice on Tuesday because of an ankle injury, the addition of Lane could basically serve as insurance in case Ansah can't play this week.

As for the practice squad changes, Miller has once again been let go. He was released from the practice squad last month as well, but the Lions brought him back less than a week later. This time, he was released to make room for Webb, who played at Michigan and can provide extra depth at the tight end position in practice.
