Lions work out Havard Rugland, other kickers

The Detroit Lions brought in Kickalicious and some other kickers for a workout on Monday.

After David Akers missed a 31-yard field goal on Thanksgiving, the Detroit Lions decided to hold a workout for kickers on Monday. Among the kickers in attendance for the workout was none other than Mr. Kickalicious himself, Havard Rugland.

Dave Birkett reports that the Lions also worked out Olindo Mare and Justin Medlock. Mare, who entered the NFL in 1997, most recently spent some time with the Chicago Bears in 2012. He went 6 for 8 on field goals in three games. Medlock, meanwhile, went 7 for 10 on field goals in 10 games for the Carolina Panthers last season.

Considering Jim Schwartz expressed confidence in Akers, who is now 15 for 20 on field goals this year, following last week's game, it doesn't seem like a change is going to happen just because some kickers worked out. My feeling is that the workout was simply to give the Lions an idea of what options are out there in case Akers continues to struggle. If he can't get it together down the stretch, then the Lions will have to make a change.
