Lions sign 10 players to futures deals

The Detroit Lions have added 10 players to their roster via futures contracts.

Brad Mills-USA TODAY Sports

With the end of the season upon us for the Detroit Lions, the time has come for them to sign players to futures contracts. Following the conclusion of each team's season, various players are added to rosters via futures deals, with most of the players usually signing after spending time on a practice squad.

For the Lions, they have signed 10 players to futures contracts for 2014. Here's the list (via Tim Twentyman):

RB Steven Miller
WR Patrick Edwards
WR Corey Fuller
WR Carlin Isles
WR Cody Wilson
DT Jimmy Saddler-McQueen
DT Xavier Proctor
LB Jon Morgan
K John Potter
K Giorgio Tavecchio

Nearly everybody on this list was with the Lions last summer, and nearly everybody on this list spent some time on their practice squad during the 2013 season. The most notable names might actually be the two kickers. Potter is from Kalamazoo and played for Western Michigan, and he made 3 of his 4 field goal attempts for the Washington Redskins this season. Tavecchio, meanwhile, is a former Green Bay Packers kicker.

With David Akers likely done in Detroit, it appears that the Lions are planning to go into the offseason with Potter and Tavecchio competing for the starting kicker job. That could obviously change if the Lions draft a kicker or sign another one in free agency, but it's a two-man race for the time being.
