Lions coaching rumors: Add Jim Caldwell to the list of candidates?

The Detroit Lions may have Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Jim Caldwell on their list of head coaching candidates.

More and more names seem to be leaking out in the Detroit Lions' coaching search. Earlier, it was reported that the Lions are taking a look at Seattle Seahawks assistant Tom Cable, and now word has leaked out that Detroit may have interest in Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Jim Caldwell.

Caldwell became the Indianapolis Colts' head coach following Tony Dungy's retirement in 2009. He led the Colts to a 14-2 record and an appearance in the Super Bowl in his first season, and he followed that up with a 10-6 record and another trip to the playoffs a year later. In 2011, however, with Peyton Manning out for the season, Caldwell's Colts went 2-14 and he was fired.

Since then, Caldwell has been with the Ravens. He was simply the Ravens' quarterbacks coach at first, but he took over the offensive coordinator job late in the 2012 season and played a big role in Baltimore's run to the Super Bowl. He is still the Ravens' offensive coordinator, but their offense was not very good this past season.

The names that have been connected to the Lions so far have been pretty underwhelming, but this is an important thing to remember:

At this stage in the coaching search, the Lions seem to be simply exploring all of their options. Unlike some of the other teams looking for a new head coach, the Lions haven't already lined up interviews with potential candidates, and as far as we know, they haven't even requested permission to talk to any candidates at this point. The Lions seem to be casting a wide net for the initial phase of their coaching search before zoning in on a more select group of candidates.
