The Detroit Lions hosted free-agent safety George Wilson for a visit on Thursday. This came one day after Wilson visited the Tennessee Titans. Wilson caught up with the Lions' official site after his visit on Thursday, and he said that he thinks of himself as a good fit for what the team is looking for.
"I definitely think I fit what they're looking for," Wilson told Detroitlions.com during his visit. "They're looking for a guy that can cover tight ends and some of these offensive weapons you have to go against. They’re looking for leadership, communication and just consistency. I think I fit the bill in terms of all of those."
I would agree with Wilson, and the fact that he is such a good fit is why I figured the Lions might be interested in him after he was released by the Buffalo Bills earlier this week. I did not think the Lions would be the very first team to call Wilson, but he said on Thursday that they were. Lions general manager Martin Mayhew called him before he even got on a plane to head home, and that's when the visit was set up.
As for what's next, Wilson said he's "very optimistic" about how the visit went. It doesn't necessarily sound like this has progressed to the point where a contract has been offered to Wilson, but it seems to be going in that direction.
