2013 NFL mock draft: Seven-round projection for Lions

At this point in the offseason, most 2013 NFL mock drafts are a couple rounds long at most. Even later in the offseason that will remain the case, making it tough to get a big-picture look at what teams may do in the NFL Draft. For the Detroit Lions, for example, drafting a defensive end in the first round and a running back in the second round would greatly impact their plans for the final day of the draft. Without the context of seven full rounds, it can be difficult to comprehend the thought process behind only one or two picks.

One site that does have a full seven-round mock draft is DraftTek. A computer model is used to simulate each pick based on team needs, and the latest simulation was posted on Wednesday. Here's a rundown of the Lions' six picks:

• Round 1: DE Dion Jordan (Oregon)
  
• Round 2: RB Giovani Bernard (North Carolina)
  
• Round 3: S Bacarri Rambo (Georgia)
  
• Round 5: S Shamarko Thomas (Syracuse)
  
• Round 6: CB Sanders Commings (Georgia)
  
• Round 7: OG Omoregie Uzzi (Georgia Tech)

This is a very defense-heavy mock draft for the Lions, as they are projected to go with a defensive player with four of their six picks. I like the thinking behind that, but I'm not all that high on the actual set of picks. I could go for Rambo in the third round, but I'm not sold on Jordan at No. 5 and a running back in the second round. I think the Lions will have better options at defensive end, and I think they will be able to pick up a running back later on in the draft.
