Lions have met with Arizona State punter Josh Hubner

Detroit Lions special teams coach John Bonamego met with Arizona State punter Josh Hubner at the NFL Combine.

USA TODAY Sports

As explained in our study on punters and the NFL Draft, the Detroit Lions could very well draft one this year to fill their need at the position. They are in need of a new punter after their struggles last season, and there are several talented punters in this year's draft.

One punter I failed to mention was Arizona State's Josh Hubner, and it turns out that he has actually already met with Lions special teams coach John Bonamego at the NFL Combine, according to Dave Birkett. While meetings like this don't necessarily mean a whole lot, it's always interesting to hear about which players are meeting with which teams.

At Arizona State, Hubner had 52 punts and an average of 47.1 yards per punt in 2012. In 2011, he averaged 41.3 yards per punt and had a total of 62 during the season. His long was 73 yards last season and 61 yards back in 2011.

CBS Sports has Hubner ranked sixth in its punter rankings and projects him to go undrafted. If this turns out to be the case and the Lions decide against drafting a punter, Hubner could be one of their top undrafted free agent targets.
