Will Bill Nagy play offensive guard or center for Lions?

When the Detroit Lions claimed Bill Nagy off waivers last summer, he was dealing with a season-ending injury. As a result, he hasn't actually had a chance to practice with the Lions. Their assessment of his play is based strictly on film of what he did with the Dallas Cowboys. The Lions know Nagy can play both offensive guard and center, but until they get an up-close look at him in practice, they won't be able to truly judge which position suits him best.

On Thursday at the NFL Combine, Lions head coach Jim Schwartz talked about Nagy and admitted that he isn't sure right now if Nagy is a better guard or center, according to Dave Birkett. Schwartz also talked about Nagy's injury history and how that will play a role in their evaluation of him going forward.

"He was a guy that obviously missed last year with the ankle injury. But we first got to know him when we played Dallas a few years ago and really liked what he did in that game and had liked what he had done when he was healthy. Health has been an issue with him, not just at Wisconsin, but in his rookie year in Dallas and also coming into the second year. It's going to be one of those things that's going to be part of his evaluation. He's had a good rehab, he's been with us a great deal, he's from Cleveland, so he was with us a great deal during the season, not just rehabbing, but also going to meetings and things like that. He had a good chance to learn our system and he's had a good rehab; but, until you get back on the field, you never know, so that has to be taken into consideration."

Considering center Dominic Raiola restructured his contract to remain with the Lions and right guard Stephen Peterman was released, one would think that Nagy will end up taking Peterman's spot, at least for this year. Then again, if Nagy outperforms Raiola at center, the opening at right guard could remain and need to be filled by someone else.

It'd be nice to have a concrete plan for Nagy, but one won't exist until he hits the practice field for the Lions.
