It looks as though you can go ahead and cross Osi Umenyiora's name off the list of potential free-agent defensive end targets for the Detroit Lions. I say that because Umenyiora is set to sign with the Atlanta Falcons, according to Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio. Umenyiora is reportedly set to make the move official on Sunday or Monday.
Earlier this week, the Lions were named as one of the teams with interest in Umenyiora. This didn't come as a very big surprise given that the Lions are still in need of help at defensive end. With only Jason Jones, Willie Young and Ronnell Lewis under their control right now, the Lions are going to have to add at least a few defensive ends before training camp.
The Lions are expected to find help at defensive end in the draft, but the thinking has been that they will pursue a veteran like Umenyiora before then so there isn't a complete lack of depth at the position. They very well still could pursue a veteran defensive end, but they will have to look at someone other than Umenyiora with him reportedly headed to Atlanta.
The Lions will also likely have to look at someone other than Elvis Dumervil, as he is reportedly set to pick between the Denver Broncos and Baltimore Ravens in the next day or so. Detroit was one of the teams linked to him after he became a free agent.
