Free-agent wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey is scheduled to visit the Detroit Lions on Wednesday. That visit is contingent on him not signing with the Indianapolis Colts, the team that hosted him for a visit on Tuesday. It appears that Heyward-Bey has in fact left the Colts without a deal, according to the Indianapolis Star's Phillip B. Wilson, meaning his visit with the Lions should be taking place as scheduled.
If Heyward-Bey was planning to sign with the Colts, chances are a deal would have been done before he left town. This is good news for the Lions, as it suggests that they are now in position to sign him. When the Lions brought in Jason Jones, Reggie Bush and Glover Quin for visits after the start of free agency, they made sure all three were signed before leaving town. I'd imagine the situation with Heyward-Bey will be similar. If they want to sign him, a deal should be in place before his visit is over.
Adding to the speculation that Heyward-Bey will ultimately sign with the Lions is that quarterback Matthew Stafford is now following him on Twitter (via MLive). Stafford made headlines earlier in the offseason when he started following Bush on Twitter, and we all know how that situation played out. Bush is now a member of the Lions, and perhaps Heyward-Bey will be the next offensive skill player to join the team.
Stay tuned for updates on Heyward-Bey's visit, as I'd imagine we'll hear something about it by the end of the day.
