Detroit Lions safety Amari Spievey was arrested on Tuesday afternoon in Connecticut. On Wednesday afternoon, his arrest hit the news, and the Detroit Lions released a statement to comment on it shortly after. Via the Lions' official site, here it is:
"We are aware of the reports involving Amari Spievey. We are in the process of gathering more information and will have no further comment at this time."
This is the same basic statement we got from the Lions throughout last offseason when players got in trouble. It's their way of commenting on the matter without really saying anything of substance. Right now, the Lions are essentially trying to figure out what happened and what their next move should be, and we may not hear anything else for the time being unless they do make a move.
Based on all of the issues from last offseason, it wouldn't surprise me if the Lions simply decide to part ways with Spievey before this becomes too much of a distraction/PR nightmare. Then again, given the he-said, she-said nature of the incident, perhaps the Lions will take a deep breath and let the legal system play out before making any decisions on Spievey's future.
