With the 42nd pick in Pride Of Detroit's 2013 NFL mock draft, the Miami Dolphins select Texas defensive end Alex Okafor. JazzyBBP is serving as the Dolphins' general manager, and his reasoning for the pick is below.
I was watching Tyler Eifert and Zach Ertz slide and was going to have to do a coin flip for who I wanted, but a couple of GMs decided to ruin my day. Oh well, I'll just draft a kick-ass pass rusher instead! When in doubt, improve the pass rush. That's how the Giants won two Super Bowls.
The Dolphins need pass-rush help. Cameron Wake is an absolute beast, but he isn't getting any younger and can't do it all himself. Now he won't have to.
Alex Okafor was a three-year starter and has improved each year. He was incredibly productive the past two seasons with a combined 100+ tackles, 19 1/2 sacks, 19 1/2 tackles for loss and 6 forced fumbles with a blocked kick and a swatted pass or two. He is always disruptive and is a nightmare in the backfield. The only LT to keep Okafor in check was Lane Johnson, who also said in an interview that Okafor is the best pass rusher he has gone up against.
How he has slipped this far is pure luck for me, because it won't happen in the real draft. I can't wait to see who is going to slide to me later in this round since I have Indy's second-round pick. Too bad we're not doing a third round, because Miami has two picks then also. (11 total!) With the way this mock draft is matching up with my big board, I'd be able to draft five day-one starters in the first three rounds. The QBs have to start being drafted, unless all the QB-needy GMs (BUF, NYJ, OAK, ARI, CLE, JAX, PHI) continue to draft scared of low approval ratings!
