With the 47th pick in Pride Of Detroit's 2013 NFL mock draft, the Dallas Cowboys select North Carolina State cornerback/safety David Amerson. Jerry Mallory is serving as the Cowboys' general manager, and his reasoning for the pick is below.
We were pleased David Amerson fell to us with this pick. Like our first-round pick, Barkevious Mingo, Amerson possesses versatility, athleticism and elite play-making ability. We plan on using him in a variety of ways, but plan on using him primarily as a safety. Safety is one of our biggest needs, and he should step in Day 1 and start.
His 2011 season was phenomenal, hauling in 13 interceptions. He regressed last year, only getting 5 picks and struggling at times adjusting to routes, which led to touchdowns. His weaknesses are masked playing safety, and his ball-hawking instincts will be at a premium. He has good size (6'1", 210 lbs.) and speed (4.44) and is very physical. We will occasionally use him as a CB in select packages. We also won't hesitate to bring him down in the box and use him as a blitzer.
