With the 56th pick in Pride Of Detroit's 2013 NFL mock draft, the Seattle Seahawks select Oregon offensive tackle/guard Kyle Long. Twon82 is serving as the Seahawks' general manager, and his reasoning for the pick is below.
The Seahawks have a few positions that can be strengthened in this year's draft if the right pick is available. Even though they have picked up former Vikings Sidney Rice (in 2011) and Percy Harvin (this offseason), wide receiver is a place where the Seahawks could stand to build some depth. With talents such as these, and Golden Tate, Seattle still lacks a solid vertical leaper. With the loss of Alan Branch and Jason Jones in free agency, the Seahawks could stand to solidify their depth at defensive tackle as well. Arguments will even be made that Seattle needs to shore up its backup quarterback situation, which currently consists of Brady Quinn and Josh Portis. Another one of their major needs is at guard, as they have a lot of unproven potential there (in terms of depth) protecting Russell Wilson.
Even though USC QB Matt Barkley is still available at this point, and even with the connection he would automatically have with former USC head coach Pete Carroll, the Seahawks took it upon themselves to ink Brady Quinn recently to a contract that solidified him as the No. 2 quarterback behind Wilson. I don't see that as a sign they have an intention of counting on Matt Barkley in any way. Also, some of the better defensive tackles and wide receivers have been picked already. Their major concern at this point needs to be protecting the main young leader at the helm that has Seahawks fans buzzing.
I chose Kyle Long because he has experience at both tackle and guard and is an extremely tough competitor on the line. As another member of the Long family, he is from a football-rich tradition and history that extends back to his Hall of Fame father's playing days. He has some raw abilities that need to be ironed out, but I have no doubt that, with Carroll's tutelage, he'll be able to play any position along the line that he is needed at almost right away.
