2013 NFL Draft results: Lions' picks by the numbers

New, comments

Let's break down the Detroit Lions' 2013 draft class by the numbers.

Rick Osentoski-USA TODAY Sports

The Detroit Lions ended up making nine picks in the 2013 NFL Draft. They went into the draft with only eight picks, but they got an extra selection in the sixth round following a trade. They ended up with five picks that originally belonged to them, two compensatory picks that were awarded to them by the NFL and two picks that came from the Seattle Seahawks in the aforementioned trade.

Here are more numbers on the Lions' 2013 draft class:

  • The Lions used four of their picks on offensive players, four on defensive players and one on a specialist.
  • On offense, the Lions added one running back (Theo Riddick), one wide receiver (Corey Fuller), one tight end (Michael Williams) and one offensive guard (Larry Warford).
  • The defensive picks included two defensive ends (Ezekiel Ansah and Devin Taylor), one linebacker (Brandon Hepburn) and one cornerback (Darius Slay).
  • The one specialist the Lions drafted was a punter (Sam Martin).
  • Nearly half of the Lions' picks came from SEC schools. Slay, Warford, Taylor and Williams all played in the SEC (at Mississippi State, Kentucky, South Carolina and Alabama, respectively). The Lions' other five picks came from independent schools (BYU and Notre Dame), the ACC (Virginia Tech) and the FCS (Appalachian State and Florida A&M).
  • The Lions selected three players who took pre-draft visits with them (Williams, Slay and Martin).
  • Three of the Lions' picks played for Detroit's coaches in the 2013 Senior Bowl (Ansah, Warford and Williams).
  • Two of the Lions' picks played in the 2013 East-West Shrine Game (Fuller and Taylor).
  • This year, the Lions made one pick in each of the first five rounds and two picks in each of the final two rounds.
  • The Lions used a top-five pick in five of the seven rounds. Interestingly, the Lions' other four picks came in the 30s in their respective rounds.
