With the ninth pick in Pride Of Detroit's 2013 NFL mock draft, the New York Jets select Alabama offensive guard Chance Warmack. Msivits is serving as the Jets' general manager, and his reasoning for the pick is below.
As I started to research the Jets, I quickly realized how many holes their team has. I would like to invest in a new QB, but with the ninth pick there is no QB worth drafting. I wouldn't reach for Geno Smith even if he were available because I think he is the best QB in a bad draft class of QBs. Looking further into the QB picture, all could not be blamed on Mark Sanchez. Bringing in Tim Tebow was a mess that backfired, and they really just didn't have many offensive weapons.
I still had some decent players to choose from when making my decision. The Jets need a pure outside pass rusher; I was crossing my fingers hoping for Dion Jordan, but the Browns ruined my plan. The Jets cut Sione Pouha this offseason. Star Lotulelei could take his place and provide more strong building blocks. The Jets have been drafting on the defensive side with the likes of Muhammad Wilkerson and Quinton Coples. Barkevious Mingo is another strong pass rusher I took a long look at; he fills a position of need and would give Rex Ryan another toy to play with on the defensive side. But in the end I took the easy way out, going with a "safe pick" at a position of need by taking guard Chance Warmack.
The Jets lost Matt Slauson this offseason; Brandon Moore is average at best, is a free agent and is also getting a little older. Warmack would help solidify the Jets' offensive line and help open lanes in the running game. I think Warmack has a strong chance of making an impact from game No. 1. As I stated above, I looked at Mingo and Lotulelei. Both could make the same impact. However, again, I went the safe route, as I feel Warmack has a low bust factor and will most likely turn out to be a Pro Bowl player. At the very worst he becomes an above-average guard. Flashy pick, no. Building toward a better future, yes.
