John Laub, cousin of Matt Millen, receives invite to Lions' rookie minicamp

Former Richmond quarterback John Laub has been invited to the Detroit Lions' rookie minicamp later this month, according to the Morning Call. He wasn't actually signed as an undrafted free agent (despite what a report from Richmond claimed), but the Lions are essentially giving him a three-day tryout that will serve as an opportunity for him to showcase his skills in hopes of earning a contract down the road.

The most interesting thing about this story is that Laub is a cousin of former Lions general manager Matt Millen. Clearly his family ties didn't dissuade the Lions from giving Laub a shot, and he actually isn't the first relative of Millen that Detroit has brought in for a look in recent years. Back in 2011, former Army fullback Collin Mooney, who is Millen's son-in-law, was given a chance to work out for the Lions. He wasn't signed by the Lions, but he did eventually land a deal with the Tennessee Titans.

In all likelihood, Laub also won't end up signing with the Lions. If the reports are true about former Western Michigan quarterback Alex Carder signing with the Lions, then they have four quarterbacks on their roster right now. Matthew Stafford and Shaun Hill are the top two QBs, and Carder will battle Kellen Moore for the third and final spot on the roster at the position. Unless there's an injury or Carder just doesn't work out, there won't be room for Laub.

Laub, by the way, passed for 1,722 yards, 9 touchdowns and 2 interceptions in seven games last season. He also rushed for 356 yards and 6 touchdowns before a broken ankle ended his season early.
