The Detroit Lions got up to 90 players on their roster earlier on Monday when they signed offensive guard/center Darren Keyton, who earned a contract after having a successful tryout over the weekend. The Lions didn't stay at 90 players for long, though. They are already back down to 89 players after releasing center Skyler Allen, according to Tim Twentyman.
Allen joined the Lions as an undrafted free agent shortly after the 2013 NFL Draft came to a close. He took part in the Lions' rookie minicamp this past weekend, but it appears that Keyton has taken his spot on the roster given the timing of these two moves.
Originally I was thinking that the Lions might be opening up a roster spot for someone like Josh Cribbs, who visited the team on Monday, but he hasn't made a decision on where to sign just yet. It's entirely possible Cribbs could end up filling that open roster spot, but I don't think the Lions released Allen for that reason.
Following this move, the Lions are now back down to 11 undrafted free agents for 2013:
- QB Alex Carder (Western Michigan)
- RB Steven Miller (Appalachian State)
- WR Cody Wilson (Central Michigan)
- TE Joseph Fauria (UCLA)
- OT Austin Holtz (Ball State)
- OT LaAdrian Waddle (Texas Tech)
- OG/C Darren Keyton (Central Michigan)
- DT Michael Brooks (East Carolina)
- LB Jon Morgan (Albany)
- LB Alex Elkins (Oklahoma State)
- S Martavius Neloms (Kentucky)
