Lions undrafted free agents: Jon Morgan scouting report

A look at Detroit Lions undrafted free agent Jon Morgan and what he brings to the table.

USA TODAY Sports

Our scouting report series continues with the Detroit Lions' 2013 undrafted free agents. Next up is Jon Morgan.

LB Jon Morgan (Albany) - UDFA

The Detroit Lions signed a pair of undrafted linebackers this year. The first we're taking a look at is Jon Morgan, who played for four years for the Albany Great Danes, which is an FCS school.

Random fact

Like Ziggy Ansah, Morgan majored in actuarial science in college.

What the experts are saying

1045TheTeam.com:

Morgan signed with the Detroit Lions after a career in which he recorded 247 total tackles, 106 of which came in the 2011 season. His lateral speed and ability to cover NFL caliber tight ends are question marks, but one would assume that his contributions are going to come as a special teams player while the Lions evaluate his professional capabilities.

Stats

2009: 33 tackles, 2.5 TFL, 1.0 sack, 1 pass defended, 2 fumble recoveries

2010: 54 tackles, 0.5 TFL, 1 INT, 3 passes defended, 1 fumble recovery

2011: 106 tackles, 6.0 TFL, 2.5 sacks, 3 passes defended, 2 forced fumbles, 1 fumble recovery

2012: 54 tackles, 2 INT, 6 passes defended

Outlook for 2013

The Lions have plenty of linebackers, and they feature a top five that is pretty much set with Stephen Tulloch, DeAndre Levy, Ashlee Palmer, Tahir Whitehead and Travis Lewis. The battle for the sixth spot will be between Brandon Hepburn, Carmen Messina, Cory Greenwood, Alex Elkins and Morgan, and it will really come down to who performs the best on special teams. Realistically, Morgan is more likely to land on the practice squad than the 53-man roster.
