Kassim Osgood hasn't re-signed with Lions

Contrary to a report from earlier in the offseason, wide receiver Kassim Osgood has not re-signed with the Detroit Lions.

USA TODAY Sports

Back in March, just after free agency opened, it was reported by Pro Football Talk that wide receiver Kassim Osgood re-signed with the Detroit Lions on a one-year deal. The move made sense at the time, as Osgood performed well on special teams for the Lions in 2012. The thinking was that he was coming back to continue to help with the Lions' special teams units.

As it turns out, Osgood never actually ended up re-signing with the Lions. There has been some confusion over his status with the team, but as Tim Twentyman noted on Twitter on Monday, Osgood is not under contract with the Lions or any other team right now. He is currently an unrestricted free agent.

I'm not exactly sure if the door is still open for Osgood to return to the Lions at this point. It's not clear why he wasn't re-signed in the first place. Perhaps PFT's story was wrong, or perhaps Osgood was going to re-sign before the situation changed on his or the Lions' end. In any case, Osgood isn't under contract right now.

Safety Trevor Coston is also not under contract with the Lions right now despite it being reported that he had signed with them after the draft. Perhaps the paperwork simply hasn't been made official, but with him not on the team just yet, the Lions currently have 89 players on their roster (if you count this year's draft picks).
