During last season, at the end of November, Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham received a 66 percent approval rating despite the team's struggles. This was way up from the 32 percent approval rating he got a month earlier, indicating that fans warmed up to what Cunningham and the defense were doing as the season progressed.
Now, as we look ahead to the 2013 season, Cunningham is back to coach a unit that has gained a lot of talent since the end of 2012. The Lions went out and signed defensive end Jason Jones and safety Glover Quin and drafted defensive end Ziggy Ansah, defensive end Devin Taylor and cornerback Darius Slay. Add in the return of injured players like Bill Bentley and Chris Greenwood and Cunningham really has a lot of talent to work with this year.
While it obviously remains to be seen how the defense will perform in 2013, how would you rate the job Cunningham has done with this unit since becoming the defensive coordinator? The defense has shown a lot of promise at times, but they've definitely had their fair share of struggles as well. Also, the Wide-9 system the Lions utilize has drawn a lot of criticism, although it could be argued that the scheme is more of a Jim Schwartz decision than a Cunningham one.
In any case, vote in Cunningham's approval poll below and leave your thoughts in the comments.
