Thanks to rain, the Detroit Lions took their practice indoors on Monday for the first time during training camp this year. During the practice, a total of seven players were sidelined, six of whom are defensive backs. Here's the full list:
WR Patrick Edwards
CB Chris Houston
CB Chris Greenwood
CB Ross Weaver
S Louis Delmas
S Amari Spievey
S John Wendling
Greenwood, Weaver, Delmas and Wendling all missed practice on Sunday as well. Greenwood remains out with a hamstring injury, while Weaver and Wendling remain out with unknown ailments. Delmas received another day off on Monday because of his knee issues.
Edwards and Houston are completely new to the injury list, and it's not clear what forced them to miss practice on Monday. Spievey, the other player out, previously missed a couple of practices with a hamstring injury, so perhaps that flared up and forced him to sit out another session.
There is definitely a theme here with so many of the injuries affecting defensive backs. Perhaps it's simply a case of the Lions using the advice they received from a San Francisco 49ers coach about being extra careful with the secondary when injuries pop up. Or perhaps the secondary is just having a string of bad luck with injuries. Hopefully it's the first possibility and the Lions are just taking precautions with most of the players who were out on Monday.
UPDATE: It turns out Houston was out because of a migraine, according to Tim Twentyman.
