Below is a look at what Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz had to say after Monday's practice. (Quotes provided by the Lions.)
On having a quarterback who can carry the weight of the franchise: "That's nothing new. I'm sure it was the same way with Bobby Layne. Different execution, but the same idea. The quarterback has always been the face of the franchise. The guy that shoulders losses and probably gets more credit for wins than he deserves. It comes with the territory."
On how LB Chris White can help the team: "First, he's a good special teams player. He adds to our linebacker depth. We liked him when he was coming out of Mississippi State. We'll give him a chance and see what he can do."
On White's strengths on special teams: "He's got good size, you see him right there. He's a good athlete. He got derailed with an injury a couple years ago, but he's got some good production."
On if the first-team offense will play in the fourth preseason game: "I think that all the guys that are 100-percent healthy will get out and get some playing time. There will be some guys that won't play, like guys that have been nursing some minor injuries and things like that. I think it's important this 11 days of whatever it is between then and the first game, you'd like to have at least a little bit of play time. We'll take them all by case-by-case basis. Certain guys will play a little bit more than others. I don't think you'll see everybody coming out at the same time. We'll just do the best we can with it."
On if the right side of the offensive line has been solidified: "I think there are still possibilities there. It's coming to focus over the course of training camp. There could still be something that could change our minds. It's important to finish strong and finish the way we started. It's starting to come in. All of our positions are starting to come into focus, but none of them are cemented yet."
On if the kick or punt return position has been settled: "No. That's another one that's going to depend particularly on our 53 and how we're able to manage that as cut down day comes. Again, we have a lot of options there and we'll put good players back there regardless of how that all works out."
On the importance of the 4th preseason game for CB Chris Greenwood: "It's critical for him. Young player who missed all the season last year, including the preseason. He practiced for a couple weeks during that PUP window, but during the middle of the season it's hard to really equate that to anything. It's not a competitive situation. You get in competitive situations. He had a nice play breaking up the two-point. He also had another play that he could've played a lot better. He needs to be more consistent and the only way he can do that is by getting play time."
On TE Brandon Pettigrew being more consistent since his dropped pass in the Cleveland game: "I think he's had a really consistent camp. I think he bounced back from that play in that same game. I don't think he waited until the next game to bounce back from that."
On what has attributed to his 14-5 record during preseasons: "I honestly couldn't tell what we were last year. I know we won the one last week. Preseason games, you always want to win games and you're trying, and you want guys to succeed and things like that, but there are also other agendas in preseason games. You might go into the second half, and I'm just making this up, but you have some corners you want to look at and you play a lot more man than you would normally play in a game plan because you want to see those guys cover man. Maybe you're on offense and on you call out more runs than you would normally call out in a situation because you want to see a running back. Or maybe vice-versa, you see a lot more passes because you're trying to get more looks at wide receivers. You want to see guys execute within the scheme. You want to see talent win. We're trying to win every single game, but I think probably more important is the execution of the scheme and evaluating talent on the field."
