NFL roster cuts: Lions release three players

The Detroit Lions have kicked off their final round of roster cuts by releasing a trio of players, according to Dave Birkett: wide receiver Corey Fuller, offensive lineman Darren Keyton and linebacker Jon Morgan.

The Lions selected Fuller at the beginning of the sixth round in this year's draft. He was described as a pretty raw player considering he only switched from track to football in college a few years ago, and that turned out to be pretty accurate. Fuller didn't do a whole lot in the preseason, and he just wasn't worth keeping around on the 53-man roster at this point. Look for him to go to the practice squad as the Lions try to develop him into a future contributor.

Keyton joined the Lions after earning a contract at their rookie minicamp in May. He was invited as a tryout, and the Lions added him to their roster a few days later. An undrafted free agent out of Central Michigan, Keyton was always a long shot to actually make the 53-man roster, but he got quite a bit of playing time in the preseason at center. He may be a candidate for the practice squad because of what he did in the preseason.

Morgan, an undrafted free agent out of Albany, joined the Lions back in April. He was considered a long shot at best to make the 53-man roster, but he managed to stick with the team up until the final round of cuts. There were just other players ahead of him on the depth chart at linebacker, but perhaps he will be a candidate for the practice squad as well.

This brings the Lions down to 72 players. They have to be down to 53 by 6 p.m. ET on Saturday.
