The Detroit Lions got some bad news following their 27-20 win over the Washington Redskins on Sunday: Jason Jones is out for the season. The defensive end went down with a non-contact knee injury during Sunday's game, and it turns out that he ruptured his patellar tendon. He had to be carted off the field following the injury, so it's no surprise that the diagnosis is so serious.
For the Lions, this means they are down a starting defensive end. Jones was added in the offseason as part of the Lions' makeover at the position, and he became an immediate starter. Coming into Sunday's game, he only had 1 tackle and 1 pass defended, but his versatility and veteran presence was a nice addition to the D-line.
With Jones out for the season, the Lions will have to add a new defensive end this coming week. My bet is that former Lion Lawrence Jackson will get a phone call. He spent time with the Minnesota Vikings this past offseason, but he was released last month. He's still a free agent, and he seems to make the most sense in terms of a replacement for Jones on the roster.
The Lions do have four healthy defensive ends with Ziggy Ansah, Willie Young, Israel Idonije and Devin Taylor, who was inactive on Sunday. I suppose it's possible they could roll with them, but adding a veteran to replace Jones seems like a given at this point.
