Cowboys sign Chris Greenwood off Lions' practice squad

The Detroit Lions have lost Chris Greenwood to the Dallas Cowboys.

Tim Fuller-US PRESSWIRE

It's official: Cornerback Chris Greenwood is a member of the Dallas Cowboys. He was officially signed on Wednesday morning after passing a physical, meaning he is no longer on the Detroit Lions' practice squad.

Greenwood, a fifth-round pick out of Albion in 2012, joined the Lions' practice squad after being let go during this year's final round of cuts. It was no surprise that he didn't make the 53-man roster considering he was hurt for most of training camp (just like last year). He just didn't have much of a chance to make his case for a roster spot, and the Lions were already pretty filled at cornerback anyway.

It's always risky when you put guys on the practice squad since other teams can sign them at any time. That's what happened here. The Cowboys had an open spot on their 53-man roster, and just like the Miami Dolphins did years ago with Lions draft pick Lydon Murtha, they snatched him away from Detroit. (It's also worth noting that the Lions originally added Joique Bell and Corey Hilliard by signing them from other teams' practice squads.)

Just because Greenwood is with the Cowboys now doesn't mean he's guaranteed to remain with them, of course. If he's released at some point later this season, I'm sure the Lions will try to bring him back to Detroit. For now, though, they have an opening on their practice squad that needs to be filled with Greenwood leaving for Dallas.
