Here's a look at some of the Detroit Lions' top players through the first three weeks of the season, as based on Pro Football Focus' grades.
QB Matthew Stafford (+5.7) - Stafford has thrown for 1,020 yards, 6 touchdowns and 2 interceptions through three games. He's completed 63.6 percent of his passes, and he's looked more like the quarterback we saw in 2011 than 2012. Currently, he is tied for the fifth-best quarterback grade on PFF.
WR Calvin Johnson (+5.0) - Johnson has 17 catches for 268 yards and 3 touchdowns. He's on pace to match his 16-touchdown total from 2011, which would obviously be a big improvement after only having 5 touchdowns last season. On PFF, Johnson is No. 10 among wide receivers.
DT Ndamukong Suh (+12.1) - Just looking at his stats -- 8 tackles, 0 sacks and 1 pass defended -- you might not think Suh is having that great of a season. However, he's been the Lions' best offensive or defensive player by far. In fact, he's been the best defensive tackle in all of the NFL, per PFF. Suh has been responsible for 17 quarterback hurries and 4 quarterback hits, and he's been playing at an elite level so far this season.
DE Willie Young (+6.2) - Young's stats also aren't that outstanding upon first glance, as he has only 10 tackles and 1.0 sack. On PFF, though, Young is tied for the fifth-best 4-3 defensive end grade in the NFL thanks to 11 quarterback hurries and 5 quarterback hits.
P Sam Martin (+12.8) - Martin has contributed a lot to the Lions' special teams. There have been a few mistakes here or there, but he's the No. 4 punter in the NFL on PFF (he currently has a 48.5 yards per punt average and a net average of 42.7). What's more, he's 10th in the NFL on kickoffs on PFF. Combining those two roles together, Martin has a +12.8 grade on the season.
