Below is a look at what Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz had to say after Wednesday's practice. (Quotes provided by the Lions.)
On how if ball security is especially important against the Bears defense: "That's probably the number one thing, offensively going in is to protect the football. They force a lot of turnovers, always have. They are very opportunistic. They have given up some yards this year, but that really hasn't mattered. It's been the turnovers and the defensive scores that have mattered."
On the biggest difference between last year's offense and what Bears Head Coach Marc Trestman has installed this year: "Getting rid of the ball a lot quicker. I think that's probably the biggest thing. They still run play-action and do a lot of different of things, but the ball still does come out a lot quicker. Their percentage completion is higher as a result. They have taken fewer sacks as a result and I think they only have three sacks so far."
On how DT Ndamukong Suh has played this year: "He's been outstanding. It's more so been the effect he has had on the offenses and what has happened with other defensive players. He has created plays for our other defensive players more so than filling the stat sheet up himself. He's been very consistent and has made an impact in every single game. A couple of the forced interceptions and some of the sacks that we have gotten have been directly related to him and also some of the throwaways. He's been very good."
On if this is Suh's best season start: "I don't know. I don't know how to compare different seasons and stuff like that. Let's just say he's playing at a high level."
On if Suh is being played differently this year: "Everybody has a little different scheme. We have played three completely different schemes. Running zone, stretching option and all kinds of different things. Every team has a little different way. It's a little bit like Calvin (Johnson).
On Suh's endurance: "Usually guys who play as many snaps don't play at a high level, but he's hustling. He made a lot of plays downfield against the Redskins. All our defensive linemen did, but especially Suh with chasing balls down the field. It's very rare that the defensive lineman makes a tackle on the pass, but we had a couple incidents of that."
On what makes CB Charles Tillman so good: "He's an experienced player and knows his way around. He knows that defense very well, but he's very good at punching the ball out. That's probably his number one thing. He has great size and really long arms. It's something that we have to be aware of. When we have played well against these guys, we have protected the football. When we have lost games against these guys, we have turned the ball over. Like I said, that's got to be the pretty much number one thing offensively. We have to score and protect the football."
On if the Bears drafting G Kyle Long specifically to matchup against Suh the ultimate compliment that can be paid to a player: "I don't know. I'm sure they drafted for more than that. They like him and they have two rookies playing on their offensive line. They have four new starters on their offensive line. (Roberto) Garza is really the only returner. Long and (Jordan) Mills are over on our left, right, and their right side. Bringing in (Matt) Slauson and signing (Jermon) Bushrod -- a couple of those guys we have seen before. Like I said, they've done a good job. They have run the ball well. They are a good screen team. Forte is an excellent back. Cutler is getting rid of the ball quick. They haven't taken very many sacks or many negative yard plays. That's something that we need to be able to create and yet stop the run. We have to be able to create some of those negative plays. It's going to be tough. They have done a nice job so far this year."
On if it's encouraging to have Bush at practice: "It's encouraging to get all the guys that are limited in some way out there. We'll get through the week and see where we get to this weekend. We certainly want to get everybody on the field. He's no different. We missed him on Sunday. We were able to put a good game plan together and execute the game plan, but he's a very valuable part of our offense. He affects the way defenses play us. If we can get him back on the field, that'll be a big plus for us."
On if T Jason Fox's time off has been a setback for him: "We'll see. He missed a little bit of time, but he's played a lot of football even though it hasn't been experience game wise. He's been through a lot of stuff and when he's healthy he'll get back up to speed pretty quickly."
