Lions notes: Sam Martin named NFC Special Teams Player of the Week

  • Sam Martin has been named the NFC Special Teams Player of Week 3. He did have a 72-yard punt, but I'm a bit surprised his overall performance was considered worthy of that honor. In any case, he's the first Detroit Lions punter to win that award since Jim Arnold in 1993. (Martin's 72-yard punt, by the way, was the longest for the Lions since Tom Skladany booted the ball 74 yards in 1981, according to Tim Twentyman.)

  • As of Wednesday, Ndamukong Suh still hadn't heard back from the NFL about the appeal of his $100,000 fine. He also hadn't heard anything about the play involving Eric Winston, but Suh did comment on it on Wednesday: Petty is a good way to sum it up, especially considering Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio actually wrote an article on Wednesday with the following title: "Suh was neither aggressor nor victim in Week Three." Obsess much?

  • Ziggy Ansah is among the nominees for the NFL's Pepsi Next Rookie of the Week award.

  • Nate Burleson is currently the league leader in catch rate with 19 receptions on 23 targets.

  • Is the curse of Matt Millen now a thing?
  • The Lions' schedule is currently the easiest in the entire NFL.

  • Matthew Stafford is ranked seventh on Dan Graziano's MVP watch on ESPN.

  • The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have benched quarterback Josh Freeman in favor of Mike Glennon. This means that Stafford is the only quarterback from the 2009 draft class still in a starting role.
