The Detroit Lions' 53-man roster for Week 1 of the season is finally set. On Wednesday morning, the Lions made their final moves in advance of their first game by re-signing linebacker Rocky McIntosh and placing running back Montell Owens on injured reserve with the designation to return.
McIntosh returns to the Lions after being released on Sunday. He was let go to clear room for waiver claim DeJon Gomes, a safety the Lions picked up after he was released by the Washington Redskins. At the time, it seemed strange for the Lions to go into the season with only five linebackers, but now it makes sense since they planned on bringing back McIntosh all along.
Since Owens has been designated to return, he will be eligible to practice again after the sixth week of the season. He can be activated to play in a game after Week 8, but with the Lions on a bye then, we won't actually see him in a game until Week 10.
The Lions now have 25 players on offense, 25 players on defense and three specialists heading into the 2013 season.
