Lions coaching rumors: Ken Whisenhunt remains clear favorite

Thursday's interview with Ken Whisenhunt seemingly solidified his status as the Detroit Lions' top coaching candidate.

The Detroit Lions have completed four interviews as part of their coaching search. The most recent one took place on Thursday in San Diego with Ken Whisenhunt, and no additional interviews have been scheduled at this time. Whisenhunt was seen as the favorite to land the Lions' head coaching job going into the interview, and it appears that meeting solidified his status as Detroit's top candidate. From NFL.com:

Whisenhunt interviewed with the Detroit Lions on Thursday and remains the clear front runner to become their next head coach. A source close to the search told NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport, "It is all Whiz."

Also according to Ian Rapoport, a deal "could come together quickly" with Whisenhunt and the Lions if the San Diego Chargers are eliminated from the playoffs on Sunday. It sounds like the Lions may just be waiting for Whisenhunt to become available, and once he is, expect the process to quickly move forward.

Whisenhunt, by the way, interviewed with the Tennessee Titans on Friday. He's scheduled to interview with the Cleveland Browns on Saturday, so the Lions may not be the only team waiting for the Chargers to exit the playoffs before moving forward with their coaching search.
