Lions hoping to retain three assistants, according to report

The Detroit Lions' front office reportedly wants to keep three assistants from Jim Schwartz's coaching staff.

The Detroit Lions have not yet finalized their entire coaching staff. Jim Caldwell is in place as the head coach, but decisions on the rest of the coaching staff likely won't be made until Thursday at the earliest.

When the Lions do finalize the rest of their coaching staff, it will be interesting to see if any of Jim Schwartz's guys are retained. It's going to be Caldwell's call on who his coordinators and assistants are, but the Lions' front office reportedly wants three coaches to stick around from the old staff.

I personally will be pretty upset if Jeremiah Washburn isn't retained. He did wonders for the offensive line last season, and he deserves to remain with this team. Kris Kocurek has done good work with the defensive line and John Bonamego's special teams units were quite good in 2013, but Washburn is the one I'm most concerned about the Lions potentially losing.

In other coaching news, don't expect Gunther Cunningham to be back as the Lions' defensive coordinator. Jason La Canfora reports that the Lions have received permission from the Baltimore Ravens to speak with secondary coach Teryl Austin, and he is the clear favorite to land the defensive coordinator job in Detroit.
