Tony Dungy has been mentioned quite often as someone the Detroit Lions should target in their coaching search. He's got lots of experience as a head coach in the NFL, and he's been quite successful. Although he has been an analyst for NBC for several years now, bringing Dungy, who is a Michigan native, out of retirement to take over the Lions would be a massive score for the franchise.
As it turns out, Dungy would want to take the Lions' job, but only if he had interest in returning to coaching. Via MLive, here's what he told Dan Patrick on Friday morning:
"I will tell you this, I think the best job out there is the Detroit Lions," Dungy said Friday morning in an interview on The Dan Patrick Show. "That's the job I would want." [...]
"It's a perfect situation. If I was ever coming back, it would be for that job."
Here's the problem for the Lions: Dungy is staying retired and does not have any plans to become a coach again. Dungy actually said that he thinks the Lions are the closest team to the Super Bowl among those with a coaching vacancy, and he went ahead and listed various reasons for why the job is so appealing. However, Dungy isn't planning to unretire, not even for a job with his hometown team.
