As mentioned after last Sunday's game, the Detroit Lions can clinch a playoff spot and potentially even the NFC North title this week. There are a few different paths to a playoff spot, and one scenario would actually get them into the postseason on Saturday night. There's also a scenario where the Lions could have a first-round bye wrapped up by the end of Week 16.
Via the NFL, here's a look at the Lions' official clinching scenarios for Week 16:
Detroit clinches NFC North division with:
1) DET win + GB loss
Detroit clinches a first-round bye with:
1) DET win + GB loss + DAL loss
If the scenario for clinching the NFC North plays out and the Dallas Cowboys lose to the Indianapolis Colts, the Lions will actually clinch a first-round bye. That would make their Week 17 matchup with the Packers irrelevant unless the Seattle Seahawks beat the Arizona Cardinals and both teams proceed to lose next week. That's the only scenario where the Lions could have a shot at the No. 1 seed in the NFC.
Detroit clinches a playoff spot with:
1) DET win OR
2) DET tie + PHI loss or tie OR
3) PHI loss
With the Philadelphia Eagles playing the Washington Redskins on Saturday, the Lions could clinch a playoff spot before Sunday even arrives. An Eagles loss doesn't exactly seem likely, but that doesn't change the fact that all the Lions need to get into the playoffs is a win over the Bears. It's as simple as that.
