SB Nation's latest 2014 NFL mock draft features a few trades, including a couple in the top 10 picks. The end result is three quarterbacks going at the top of the draft, Sammy Watkins and Mike Evans going in the top eight and Khalil Mack going seventh overall.
With Watkins, Evans and Mack gone in this particular scenario, the Detroit Lions don't necessarily have a ton of appealing options. They could reach for the third wide receiver in the draft, or they could simply elect to go with the top cornerback or top safety. They could also go with the best offensive tackle on the board, although that wouldn't make much sense given their lack of need at the position.
This mock draft actually has the Lions going in a completely different direction by having them take North Carolina tight end Eric Ebron. With Brandon Pettigrew set to become a free agent, tight end could be one of the Lions' top needs, and adding a potential playmaker like Ebron wouldn't be a bad idea. Last season at North Carolina, he caught 62 passes for 973 yards and 3 touchdowns, and pairing him with Joseph Fauria would give the Lions a lot of talent at the position.
Obviously it would depend on who is available and if any teams want to move up, but I actually think trading down would be the best-case scenario if Watkins, Evans and Mack are gone. Rather than potentially reach for a player like Ebron or even one of the top defensive backs, I think the best course of action would be to slide back a few spots and pick up an extra selection or two. The Lions could still have a shot at Ebron down in the teens, and an extra pick or two would really be nice later in the draft.
