The Detroit Lions released safety Louis Delmas last week, freeing up $6 million in cap space in the process. The Lions reportedly want to re-sign Delmas to a more affordable contract, but he is planning on exploring his other options first.
One of Delmas' other options appears to be the Pittsburgh Steelers. Pro Football Talk reports that Delmas is visiting the Steelers on Monday, indicating that he could end up landing in Pittsburgh. Mike Florio notes that Ryan Clark is set to become a free agent and Troy Polamalu has a large cap number, so Delmas could potentially step in at either safety spot for the Steelers.
Last year, when Delmas became an unrestricted free agent, he visited both the St. Louis Rams and San Francisco 49ers before ultimately re-signing with the Lions. Detroit gave him an incentive-laden contract to protect itself against injuries, and Delmas ended up playing in all 16 games for the first time in his career.
The second year of Delmas' contract with the Lions was far too expensive based on the production he gave them in 2013, so the team released him last Thursday. They do want him back on a new, cheaper contract, but it remains to be seen if Delmas will want to re-sign with the Lions after being released.
