Lions notes: About those second-round picks...

Lions notes looks at Martin Mayhew's second-round draft picks, Eric Decker, Sammy Watkins and much more.

  • With Louis Delmas being released by the Detroit Lions last week, it continued a rough run for Martin Mayhew's second-round picks. You may want to look away, because the list isn't pretty: Delmas (often-injured cap casualty), Titus Young (lost his mind and was released), Mikel Leshoure (tore his Achilles and is now at the bottom of the depth chart), Ryan Broyles (tore his ACL and ruptured his Achilles) and Darius Slay (had two knee surgeries in his rookie year). Also, Mayhew traded up a few spots from the second round in 2010 to take Jahvid Best, whose career was ended prematurely by concussions. Yikes.

  • For the sake of comparison, I present to you Matt Millen's second-round picks: Dominic Raiola, Shaun Rogers, Kalimba Edwards, Boss Bailey, Teddy Lehman, Shaun Cody, Daniel Bullocks, Drew Stanton, Ikaika Alama-Francis, Gerald Alexander and Jordon Dizon. Okay, I'll stop now.

  • Broyles is "happy" with the progress he's made in the recovery from his Achilles injury.

  • Rotoworld recently ranked the NFL's head coaches and the new hires for 2014. Unfortunately for Jim Caldwell, he came in last on the new hires list (yes, even behind Mike Pettine and Jay Gruden).

  • There's speculation that wide receiver Eric Decker could get $9-10 million as a free agent this offseason. If that's even remotely accurate, you can go ahead and cross the Lions off the list of potential landing spots for Decker. They need to sign a veteran wide receiver, but not at a cost like that.

  • NFL.com's Bucky Brooks views the Lions as one of five teams that would be an ideal landing spot for Clemson wide receiver Sammy Watkins.
