With the 21st pick in Pride Of Detroit's 2014 NFL mock draft, the Green Bay Packers select Notre Dame defensive tackle Louis Nix. Jettero2112 is serving as the Packers' general manager, and his reasoning for the pick is below.
The Packers have quite a few needs coming into this draft. I looked hard at the SS, ILB and DT positions the most, with WR as a secondary option. With Calvin Pryor and Ha Ha Clinton-Dix off the board, I believe it would be a reach to grab one of the next available safeties in Dion Bailey or Jimmie Ward, who should still be on the board in the second round. I also considered C.J. Mosley at this spot, but, with his injury history, I believe he's not a suitable candidate for the Pack.
This leaves me with a great selection of Louis Nix, a nose tackle from Notre Dame. Ra'Shede Hageman was also an option at NT, but I believe Nix has more upside and will be a great addition considering B.J. Raji is playing on a one-year deal and has not really performed as expected.
Nix is a big kid but has good speed and quickness with a lot of power to get into the backfield. He can handle a double team but should see less of that at the next level. My only issues with Nix are his ability as a pass rusher and his conditioning and stamina. With good coaching these can be overcome, and I see Nix as the heir apparent to Raji next season.
