Lions notes: Darius Slay continues to impress

Lions notes looks at Darius Slay's impressive start to OTAs, updates on a couple of former Detroit assistants and much more.

  • Darius Slay is entering his second season in the NFL, and based on the early reports from the Detroit Lions' OTAs, he has improved quite a bit since his rookie year came to a close. ESPN's Michael Rothstein noted that Slay has "shown better recovery if he gets beat early in a route," and Rothstein mentioned that Slay's "coverage skills" are better as well. Hopefully what Slay has been able to do in OTAs will translate to the field during actual games later in the year.

  • Dallas Cowboys linebacker Sean Lee tore his ACL during an OTA this week, and Lions players used the injury as a reminder that they have to be "taking care of each other" during practice.

  • There's a lot going on in this picture:
  • FOX Sports' Ross Jones has an interesting piece on Todd Downing that includes the story of how Downing landed the Buffalo Bills' quarterbacks coach gig after he was fired by the Lions.

  • Former Lions and current Jacksonville Jaguars offensive line coach George Yarno has been diagnosed with cancer. My thoughts go out to him and his family.
