After waiving defensive end Kalonji Kashama with the injured designation on Monday, the Detroit Lions had an open spot on their roster. On Tuesday afternoon, they filled that open roster spot by claiming wide receiver Quintin Payton off waivers.
Payton joins the Lions after being waived by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday. He originally joined the Buccaneers back in May as an undrafted free agent out of North Carolina State. At NC State, Payton finished his career with 86 catches for 1,443 yards and 5 touchdowns.
With the Lions, Payton figures to simply be a camp body. He is joining the Lions pretty late in the game with training camp already underway, and his best bet is to show enough to get into the mix for a spot on the practice squad. Anything beyond that would be pretty surprising.
By the way, Kashama cleared waivers on Tuesday and has been put on injured reserve by the Lions. I'd imagine that he will be released from IR at some point, but that's where he's at for now.
