Second-year defensive end Ziggy Ansah was activated from the Detroit Lions' PUP list on Tuesday afternoon. This means that Ansah has been cleared to get on the field for the first time in training camp, and he should take part in the Lions' night practice later on Tuesday.
Ansah had been out since having shoulder surgery back in February. He was out for the Lions' OTAs and minicamps this offseason, and he was stuck on the sideline during the first part of training camp while on the PUP list. Now, though, Ansah is ready to practice, and although it remains to be seen when he will make his return to game action, this is an important first step.
With Ansah off the PUP list, only wide receiver TJ Jones remains on it. Jones also had offseason shoulder surgery, although his was much more recent than Ansah's. As a result, it's starting to look like Jones could spend the first part of the regular season on the PUP list. That would free up a roster spot and give the Lions the option of adding him to their active roster later in 2014, but that's just speculation on my part.
