Lions claim Emil Igwenagu, Michael Egnew off waivers

The Detroit Lions made several moves on Monday morning to get down to 75 players, and then they quickly went up to 77 players by claiming fullback Emil Igwenagu and tight end Michael Egnew off waivers. This means that they will have to get back down to 75 players before Tuesday's 4 p.m. ET deadline.

Igwenagu is technically listed as a tight end, but Geoff Mosher reports that he is going to play fullback for the Lions. That appears to be his more natural position after playing tight end for the Philadelphia Eagles.

Emil is an excellent blocker, the best among the Eagles TEs. But he's better suited to play FB, so good for him.

Igwenagu was released by the Eagles this past weekend after playing for them the last two seasons. He originally joined them as an undrafted free agent out of UMass, and he appeared in three games during his time in Philly.

Egnew was just released by the Miami Dolphins. He was actually a third-round pick in 2012, but he was a pretty big bust for the Dolphins. In 18 career games, he caught only seven passes for 69 yards, and just generally speaking, he had a pretty unimpressive couple years in Miami.

With these two players joining the Lions just before the final round of roster cuts, it seems unlikely that either will actually make the team. However, I suppose both players could be candidates for the practice squad, so that might be the biggest reason behind the Lions' decision to claim them off waivers.
