Projecting the Lions' practice squad

What might the Detroit Lions' practice squad look like after the final cuts are made? Here's one projection.

Vaughn Ridley

The Detroit Lions will trim their roster down to 53 players this weekend, and they will also sign 10 players to their practice squad. This is up from eight players in previous years, and chances are most of those 10 spots will go to players who are released by the Lions during the final round of cuts.

In order to get an idea of what the Lions' practice squad might look like, here's a projection based on my earlier 53-man roster prediction:

QB Kellen Moore
RB George Winn
WR Corey Fuller
OT Michael Williams
OG Rodney Austin
DT Jimmy Saddler-McQueen
DT Xavier Proctor
LB Brandon Hepburn
CB Chris Greenwood
CB Mohammed Seisay

There are three disclaimers that go along with this projection. For starters, if these players are released, there's no guarantee that everybody will clear waivers. With Moore, for example, it wouldn't be surprising if the Buffalo Bills put in a claim for him if he's let go. In a scenario like that, he would go to Buffalo and no longer be eligible for the Lions' practice squad.

The second disclaimer is that the Lions usually bring in at least a couple players from other teams for their practice squad. There's no point right now in trying to predict which players from other teams might end up on the Lions' practice squad, but it's unlikely that all 10 spots will go to their own cuts.

Finally, the other disclaimer is that some of the players listed above might actually make the Lions' 53-man roster. Again, this projection was based simply on my own 53-man roster prediction, but basically everybody on this list outside of the two defensive tackles, Hepburn and Seisay could conceivably end up making the team. It's all just a guessing game right now.

Who do you think will end up on the Lions' practice squad this year?
