Under contract: Travis Swanson (2017), Darren Keyton (2016), Taylor Boggs (2016), Braxston Cave (2016)
Free agents: Dominic Raiola (UFA)
The center position is in a state of transition for the Lions. We already know that impending free agent Dominic Raiola will not be re-signed, meaning that Travis Swanson is now set to start at center going forward. The Lions drafted Swanson last year for him to eventually replace Raiola, and after what transpired during the 2014 season, Detroit decided to go ahead and make that switch this year.
Behind Swanson is a collection of unproven players who are vying to be his backup. One of those players, Darren Keyton, has been with the Lions on and off for the last couple of years, so he probably has the inside track at this point with Taylor Boggs and Braxston Cave only recently joining the team.
Need going forward?
There's a definite need for extra depth behind Swanson. If he were to get hurt, I can't imagine the Lions would feel comfortable turning to any of their current backups. With this in mind, it might be a good idea to look at signing a veteran offensive lineman who has the ability to play both center and guard. This would kill two birds with one stone in terms of addressing the Lions' need for extra interior depth, and it would give them a viable backup option behind Swanson.
