Where the Lions roster stands: Special teams

A breakdown of the Detroit Lions' specialists and what needs they may have on special teams.

Tim Fuller-USA TODAY Sports

As a precursor to free agency and the NFL Draft, we are going to take a look at each position on the Detroit Lions roster. We conclude the series with a look at the Lions' specialists.

Under contract: Matt Prater (2017), Sam Martin (2016), Don Muhlbach (2015)

Free agents: None

After dealing with an absolute mess at kicker last season, the Lions made sure to re-sign Matt Prater to keep this trio of special teams players together in 2015. Prater helped stabilize the kicker position last year after shaking off some initial rust, and now he's back in Detroit on a three-year deal.

Speaking of re-signing, that's exactly what long snapper Don Muhlbach recently did. It's really become an annual tradition for Muhlbach to re-sign with the Lions around this time of year, and that's exactly what happened at the end of February.

Finally, the other special teams player in this group is punter Sam Martin. He was quite good for most of last season as the Lions' punter and kickoff specialist (and occasional passer), but his overall performance will probably be remembered for his horribly timed 10-yard punt in the playoffs. He will have to shake off that mistake and continue to improve his consistency as he heads into his third season in the NFL.

Need going forward?

With Prater and Muhlbach re-signed, the Lions are set when it comes to their specialists.

Previously: Quarterback, running back, fullback, wide receiver, tight end, offensive tackle, offensive guard, center, defensive end, defensive tackle, linebacker, cornerback, safety
