With the ninth pick in Pride Of Detroit's 2015 NFL mock draft, the New York Giants select Iowa offensive tackle/guard Brandon Scherff. Jerry Mallory is serving as the Giants' general manager, and his reasoning for the pick is below.
We are pleased to bring in Brandon Scherff to our organization. We were sitting pretty when we looked at available options, but let's talk about our guy first. Scherff hit the "draft sweet spot" as being the best player available and playing a position of need. We think he can be a top-tier guard or right tackle as a rookie and eventually become a left tackle.
We struggled mightily on defense last year, so when players like Trae Waynes and Shane Ray were available, we considered them. Our biggest issue last year, though, was run defense more so than defending the pass, and both of those guys help in pass defense primarily. Another way to help our defense is to stay on the field on offense longer. Scherff's superb run blocking will help with that. Add Shane Vereen as a guy who will catch short to intermediate passes and we have really improved our offense this offseason.
