With the 14th pick in Pride Of Detroit's 2015 NFL mock draft, the Miami Dolphins select Michigan State cornerback Trae Waynes. Megatroniscalvin is serving as the Dolphins' general manager, and his reasoning for the pick is below.
Trae Waynes has good size for a cornerback, being 6-foot-0 and weighing 186 pounds. He ran the fastest 40-yard dash for a cornerback at the combine at 4.31 seconds. His long arms help him smother his opponent, as he plays a more physical style of coverage. He is very good at playing man-to-man and excels at covering deep.
While they do not have a glaring hole at cornerback, the Dolphins only have one really good cornerback in Brent Grimes. However, he is already 31 years old, so drafting Waynes would give the Dolphins a stellar young corner who can eventually fill in for Grimes. I considered going for a receiver here, but with a deep receiver class and DeVante Parker off the board, I opted for cornerback instead. I also considered going for a linebacker, but many of the top pass rushers like Shane Ray and Vic Beasley were off the board quickly, and I felt that Shaq Thompson is not NFL-ready and wouldn't be able to step in and start for Miami right away.
