With the 27th pick in Pride Of Detroit's 2015 NFL mock draft, the Dallas Cowboys select Wisconsin running back Melvin Gordon. Vieltech is serving as the Cowboys' general manager, and his reasoning for the pick is below.
In deciding my pick, I had to look at several factors. I looked at best player available, team needs and position rank. The Cowboys have needs on defense and at running back. The best defensive linemen were already taken, and the best corners are off the board. I do not see any of the defensive linemen available as first-round picks, and they are ranked low at their position. I considered a corner here, but the best corners left graded out too low on NFL.com. I chose the best player available, Melvin Gordon, because he also fills a need at running back with the loss of DeMarco Murray.
Adding Darren McFadden in free agency was a stopgap move. Furthermore, while this is a deep draft class for running backs, the top backs in the draft this year are Todd Gurley and Gordon. Scott Linehan loves quick running backs who can run and catch. While Gordon is unproven as a receiver, he is also underrated. His college production shows what he can do, and the Cowboys offensive line is built for his success. Without a top threat in the backfield, Tony Romo regresses, and the Cowboys are back to 8-8.
