When the Detroit Lions decided to trade up in the third round, conventional wisdom suggested they made the move to get a defensive tackle. Instead, though, the Lions opted to take Stanford cornerback Alex Carter.
Although the Lions do not have a major hole in the starting lineup or anything like that at cornerback, this was still a top position of need. Rashean Mathis will be 35 in August, and the Lions need to start getting a future replacement ready at cornerback. Now Carter will take on that role going forward.
As has been the case throughout this draft, Carter seems like another high-character, intelligent player. The Lions have definitely put an emphasis on finding players like that this year, and Carter certainly seems to fit the bill given that he went to Stanford.
What grade would you give the Lions for this pick?
