As the offseason winds down, we're going to project each position on the Detroit Lions depth chart and also take a look at some training camp battles. First up is the quarterback position.
Starter: Matthew Stafford | Top backup: Dan Orlovsky
We know the top spot on the depth chart is locked in as along as Matthew Stafford stays healthy, but there's some uncertainty surrounding the backup spot. Kellen Moore could challenge Dan Orlovsky for the backup job, and it wouldn't be surprising at all if Orlovsky ends up in the third spot on the depth chart. Ultimately, though, I think the coaches would prefer to keep Orlovsky and his experience in the backup role, so I foresee Moore waiting another year to move into the No. 2 spot.
Third string: Kellen Moore | Other players: Garrett Gilbert
The rest of the depth chart is pretty straightforward. If Moore isn't the backup, he will be the third quarterback yet again. This means that Garrett Gilbert will be fourth on the depth chart and will likely struggle to even get reps during the preseason.
Featured camp battle: Dan Orlovsky vs. Kellen Moore for the backup QB job
Other camp battles to watch: Garrett Gilbert vs. the rest of the roster for a spot on the practice squad
Aside from the battle for the backup job, I suppose the only other competition at quarterback involves Gilbert trying to earn a spot on the practice squad. With the Lions keeping three quarterbacks in recent years and the third quarterback never even dressing on game day, there hasn't exactly been a need to keep another QB around on the practice squad. Gilbert could always change that by impressing the coaches, but he will need to beat out players at other positions to show that a practice-squad spot should go to him.
